Building a digital education metropolis in Indonesia through the development of an intelligent digital teaching and learning design platform

Within the next decade, Indonesia will reach a population of 300 million, will be the 7th largest economy in the world, will have added 90 million new regular consumers, and will have more than 200 million living in urban centres. It is rapidly becoming too significant for global higher education not to contemplate and strategize the nature and scope of their interactions with Indonesia.

We have carefully and systematically analysed the complex context of Indonesia and concluded that its nuances, scale and reach necessitate an innovate digital approach to capitalise on the opportunity that is Indonesia, and to meet its current and future teaching and learning challenges. This report outlines the case for a wholly digital approach to Indonesia. It likewise outlines the case for the development of the digital infrastructure that is needed to deliver this.

Throughout this journey, it soon became obvious that the technology platform infrastructure needed to deliver high quality digital content to this market simply did not exist. The significant gaps eventually led to the conceptualisation of an intelligent digital teaching and learning design platform. We believe that any platform solution must deliver exceptionally well designed content directly to the more than 200 million smart phone users in Indonesia, it must include automated and intelligent assessments, deliver automated remediation, be accessible in Bahasa Indonesia, and must include physical and virtual social integrations.

A platform with these elements is universally in demand by other education and training stakeholders. The idea that we could build a valuable and profitable platform as the basis for a digital university campus, whilst simultaneously delivering to industry, government, and other training institutions began to emerge. We envision that this platform will act as the infrastructure engine for a metropolis of packaged knowledge and skills throughout Indonesia, all expertly constructed for a diverse community of learners.
